Static electric field inhibits the proliferation and secretion functions of splenic lymphocytes in mice
Abstract
Overview
The study focuses on the influence of static electric fields (SEFs), particularly from ultra-high voltage direct current (UHV DC) transmission lines, on the health of splenic lymphocytes in mice.
Findings
- Exposure to 56.3 ± 1.4 kV/m SEF for 28 days led to significant changes in mice splenic lymphocytes:
- Decrease in IL-10 and IFN-γ levels.
- Reduction in lymphocyte proliferation and intracellular ROS content.
- Increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.
- Structural damage to mitochondria, including cristae deficiency and vacuolization, and cellular membrane ruptures.
Conclusion
Damaged mitochondrial function and membrane integrity in splenic lymphocytes due to SEF exposure lead to decreased cell proliferation and immune function decline, highlighting potential health risks associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields.
