Hippocampal ferroptosis is involved in learning & memory impairment in rats induced by microwave & electromagnetic pulse combined exposure
Abstract
Overview
Microwave (MW) and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) radiation are recognized as environmental hazards with potential adverse effects on neurological functions. This study explores the damaging effects of MW and EMP on rat hippocampus and associated cognitive functions.
Findings
- Both MW and EMP exposures can independently impair learning and memory functions.
- Combined exposure to MW and EMP leads to more severe impairments in these cognitive functions compared to single exposures.
- Damaged neuronal structures and altered electrophysiological activity were noted post-exposure.
- Significant changes were identified in ferroptosis markers such as increased iron levels and lipid peroxidation, alongside mRNA alterations.
Conclusion
The study suggests that hippocampal ferroptosis might play a central role in the cognitive impairments induced by MW and EMP, highlighting a potentially cumulative effect of combined exposures rather than a synergistic interaction.
