Collaborative Meeting on Radiation Protection Systems by ICRP and ICNIRP
Abstract
Overview
From November 8-10, 2017, leaders of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) met in Munich, Germany, to discuss and align their approaches to radiation protection. The focus was on both the ionizing and non-ionizing segments of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Findings
- Both organizations acknowledged the need for continued collaboration and communication.
- Discussions highlighted the differences and commonalities in protection systems for ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
- Ionizing radiation is linked with both stochastic and deterministic effects, whereas non-ionizing radiation commonly causes deterministic effects, with stochastic effects observed under specific conditions like ultraviolet radiation exposure.
Conclusion
Despite existing standards, concerns remain about the adequacy of protection guidelines against non-ionizing radiation, suggesting a need for review and potential enhancement to safeguard human health effectively. A move towards optimizing protection measures in line with observed biological effects of non-ionizing radiation is highlighted.
