Abstract

Overview

Exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELFs) is a global issue. These fields, especially from transformer stations typically located within residential areas in Spain, cause significant concern among residents.

Findings

  • Internally located transformer stations (TSs) in urban areas significantly contribute to ELF magnetic field exposure.
  • The research revealed high exposure levels in residences adjacent to these TSs, with some homes experiencing levels exceeding recommended safety thresholds.
  • Approximately 25% of residents living near or over TSs are exposed to ELF-MF levels above 0.3 μT, potentially increasing their health risks associated with long-term exposure.
  • About 10% of affected residents cannot move their bedrooms or living rooms to areas with reduced exposure.

Conclusion

The study underscores the need for regulations and proactive measures to mitigate exposure and protect public health from high electromagnetic field levels, aligning with both Spanish laws and epidemiological advice.
