Residential exposure to electromagnetic fields and risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): a dose-response meta-analysis
Abstract
Overview
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease marked by a fatal prognosis and an unknown etiology. There are suggestions from various studies about potential environmental risks, including a notable emphasis on magnetic field exposure.
Findings
- A dose-response meta-analysis was conducted to examine ALS association with residential electromagnetic field exposure
- Using advanced biostatistical tools, six eligible studies were analyzed focusing on distance from power lines and magnetic field modelling
- Results showed minimal risk association, particularly reflecting very imprecise estimates
Conclusion
Despite findings indicating low association between electromagnetic fields and ALS, the currently limited data prevents comprehensive analysis and doesn't exclude potential risks in selected high exposure scenarios.
