Exposure levels of ELF magnetic fields in the residential areas of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality
Abstract
Overview
The study focuses on evaluating the exposure levels of Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) magnetic fields within residential areas of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. This includes 15 randomly selected residential sites in Bloemfontein, nine in Botshabelo, and six in Thaba Nchu.
Methodology
Measurements were conducted at varying distances (3 m, 6 m, and 9 m) from electrical substations and within the substations at a reference point (0 m). A Trifield meter model XE 100 was employed for this purpose.
Findings
- In general, variations in exposure levels were minimal across different residential sites.
- Significant differences in exposure levels were noted in one area (BORE1) with a measurement of 0.55 μT, which was higher compared to others, indicating potential higher health risks.
- The data revealed statistically significant differences between different distances from the source, with the closest distances showing higher exposure levels.
Conclusion
Despite the noticeable variability of exposure levels at different distances, all measured levels were below the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines. The rapid decrease in exposure levels with increased distance from the source was also observed. This study underlines the necessity of continuous monitoring and assessment of ELF magnetic fields in residential areas to mitigate potential health risks.
