Abstract

Overview

The implementation of fifth-generation (5G) technology has prompted significant concern regarding its impact on biosafety. This study explores the metabolic alterations that occur in Drosophila melanogaster when exposed to electromagnetic radiation at 3.5 GHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF), using a metabolomics approach.

Methodology

  • Newly emerged male fruit flies were continuously exposed to 3.5 GHz RF-EMF at three different intensities (0.1 W/m2, 1 W/m2, and 10 W/m2) during their entire life cycle.
  • The exposures took place under constant darkness for 24 hours.
  • Metabolomic analysis was conducted post-exposure to assess the biological impact.

Findings

  • Long-term RF-EMF exposure resulted in disruptions across four primary metabolic pathways: alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, ascorbate and aldehyde metabolism, and purine metabolism.
  • Thirty-four differential metabolites were identified with variable responses to the different intensities of RF-EMF exposure.
  • Notably, significant decreases were observed in several sensitive metabolites, including GABA, glucose-6-phosphate, AMP, N-formylglycinamide nucleotide, LPC, and MG, demonstrating high sensitivity to RF-EMF exposure.
  • No clear dose-dependent trend was noted among the altered metabolites.

Conclusion

This research suggests that long-term exposure to 3.5 GHz electromagnetic waves can reduce overall metabolic levels in Drosophila melanogaster. These results provide valuable insights into the mechanisms by which 5G RF-EMF induces metabolic disturbances, raising awareness about potential health effects linked to 5G radiation. There is a clear indication of a health risk connection that warrants further investigation, emphasizing the need for additional biosafety evaluations regarding EMF exposure.
