Exposure and health risks perception of ELF and RF EMF and the effect of providing information
Abstract
Overview
This study focuses on the perceptions of exposure and health risks associated with electromagnetic fields (EMF), particularly extremely low frequency (ELF) and radiofrequency (RF) fields, among mothers involved in the INMA-Gipuzkoa child cohort.
Findings
- 387 mothers assessed their perceived exposure and health risks through a detailed survey conducted pre- and post-information dissemination.
- A sub-sample of homes were measured for EMF levels showing all values far below recommended limits.
- Despite provided data, the perception of health risks remained unchanged, although perceived RF exposure slightly decreased after receiving information.
- Factors like younger age, financial difficulty, and fewer devices at home were linked to higher risk perception.
Conclusion
The study highlights persistent high risk perceptions of EMF among participants and suggests an essential role for public health authorities in effective risk communication.
