Abstract

Overview

Over the past thirty years, there has been a significant growth in wireless communication networks and increased exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF).This has raised concerns about potential, unforeseen impacts on living organisms.

Findings

Previous studies have demonstrated effects of RF-EMF on plant growth, gene expression, and metabolism under laboratory settings. Yet, the influence of RF-EMFs on plants in natural ecosystems remains largely unknown. This study explores the long-term impacts on ten herbaceous wild plant species exposed to RF-EMF in the field over four months. The findings suggest:

  • Most species showed minimal or undetectable changes.
  • Significant effects were observed in the Trifolium arvense species, showing altered growth phases and plant characteristics.

Conclusion

There are clear indications that RF-EMF exposure can lead to permanent and irreversible effects in some plant species, such as early senescence in Trifolium arvense. These findings underscore the need for expanded research into more common species and their response to RF-EMFs in their natural habitats.
