Abstract

Overview

Electricity, recognized as fundamental to the operation of living systems, has often been studied only at the atomic, molecular, and cellular levels. Yet, its role in larger ecological contexts has not been thoroughly examined until recently.

Findings

  • This study provides a comprehensive review of how electric forces are involved in natural ecological dynamics such as predator-prey relationships, pollination, and animal dispersal.
  • It also addresses the influence of human activities on these systems and introduces important conceptual frameworks, notably the biological detection of ecologically relevant electric fields through electroreception.

Conclusion

The paper highlights the need for further investigation into electric ecology, particularly aerial electroreception, which could reveal new insights into environmental interactions influenced by electricity.
