Impact of Radiofrequency Exposure from Mobile Phones on the Risk of Developing Brain Tumors in Korean and Japanese Adolescents: A MOBI-Kids Case-Control Study

Abstract

Overview

This case-control study assessed the potential risks of brain tumor development due to radiofrequency (RF) exposure from mobile phone use among adolescents in Korea and Japan. Detailed radiofrequency exposure calculations were used, based on a modified MOBI-Kids algorithm.

Methods

  • This study involved 118 brain tumor patients and 236 appendicitis controls aged 10–24 years within Korea and Japan.
  • Data were gathered via face-to-face interviews and used to determine odds ratios with a focus on cumulative specific energy and call time.

Results

  • The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for all brain tumors in the highest tertile of cumulative call time was 1.61, although the confidence interval was broad, indicating statistical uncertainty.
  • No consistent trend was observed with increased RF exposure.

Conclusion

No causal relationship was established between mobile phone use and brain tumor risks in the study. However, the observed slight elevated risk among heavy mobile phone users, despite statistical limitations, suggests that further research is necessary, especially considering technological advancements.
