Incidence trends of adult malignant brain tumors in Finland, 1990-2016
Abstract
Overview
The research aimed to analyze the incidence trends of malignant gliomas in Finland by morphology and tumor location, utilizing data from the Finnish Cancer Registry.
Methodology
- Data gathered on 4730 malignant glioma patients with detailed case notifications.
- Age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) and average annual percent changes (APCs) were calculated.
Findings
The study observed that the incidence rate of gliomas was consistent between 1990-2006 and 2007-2016, challenging earlier reports of increased incidence. Notably, there was an increased incidence in the oldest age group during the earlier period.
- Glioblastoma incidence rates increased slightly, while rates for unspecified brain tumors decreased over time.
- Significant differences in incidence trends were noted between histological types and anatomical locations.
Conclusion
There was no overall increasing trend in malignant gliomas, suggesting stable incidence rates. However, particular increases in certain age groups and changes in histological types highlight the complex nature of brain tumor epidemiology.
