Abstract

Overview

Gliomas, a group of complex human brain tumors, have a notably low 5-year survival rate and limited therapeutic options. This review examines whether extremely low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields (ELF-PEMF) could offer a new approach in treating these aggressive tumors.

Findings

  • Impact on Cellular Mechanisms: ELF-PEMF acts through various mechanisms such as modulation of calcium ions, induction of autophagy and apoptosis, promoting angiogenesis, and generation of reactive oxygen species.
  • Potential Clinical Applications: The applications of ELF-PEMF in clinical settings are reviewed, highlighting its minimal side effects.
  • Combination Therapy: Prospects for combining ELF-PEMF with conventional therapy to enhance treatment effectiveness are discussed.

Conclusion

This literature review supports the potential of ELF-PEMF in glioma treatment, providing valuable insights for oncologists and inducing a reconsideration of treatment protocols in light of promising results involving electromagnetic fields.
