Effects of Mobile Phones on Children's and Adolescents' Health: A Commentary
Abstract
Overview
The use of digital technology has grown rapidly over recent decades, specifically mobile and cordless phones, which emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation. This study commentary highlights unparalleled exposure to RF radiation among current generations of children and adolescents.
Findings
- The brain is identified as the main target organ for RF emissions from handheld wireless phones.
- An important scientific evaluation by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the WHO, in May 2011 labeled RF radiation from devices emitting nonionizing RF in the frequency range 30 kHz-300 GHz as a Group 2B "possible" human carcinogen.
- It underscores that concerns on health implications extend beyond cancer. Issues such as neurological diseases, physiological addiction, cognitive impairments, sleep, and behavioral problems are critical.
Conclusion
The study urges that the well-being of children and adolescents must be evaluated with keen attention to their behavioral changes due to interactions with modern digital technologies and the potential health risks posed by RF radiation exposure.
