Abstract

Overview

This cross-sectional study investigated the impact of using mobile phones with and without earphones on the release of nickel ions from fixed orthodontic appliances.

Methods

Conducted at the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital in Melmaruvathur, Chennai, India, the study included 60 individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment. Nickel levels in saliva were measured after two months and at intervals of 7, 14, and 21 days.

Results

  • Statistical analysis utilized paired and independent t-tests.
  • A higher mean release of nickel ions was observed in participants using mobile phones without earphones as compared to those using phones with earphones.

Conclusion

It was determined that the use of earphones while on mobile phones significantly reduces the release of metal ions from orthodontic appliances, thereby possibly reducing the health risks associated with nickel exposure.
