Electric and magnetic field pollution in near substations and investigation of anxiety and depressive effects on adult individuals living in this area
Abstract
Investigation of EMF Pollution and its Psychological Effects
Overview: This study focuses on exploring the impact of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) in Şanlıurfa city center on psychological well-being of adults.
Methodology: Measurements were conducted around Electricity Distribution Center and 44 substations to assess EMF levels and examine their potential association with anxiety and depression symptoms in adults aged 18-40 years.
- We used the Beck Anxiety Inventory Scale and Beck Depression Inventory Scale to measure psychological effects.
- The study compared results from an experimental group residing near electricity sources with a control group located away from such facilities.
Findings: Recorded maximum magnetic field (MF) and electric field (EF) values were 0.22 mT and 65.9 kV/m respectively, with EF exceeding standard limits at certain points.
Conclusion: Our statistical analysis did not reveal a significant link between EMF exposure and the symptoms of anxiety and depression, suggesting the need to explore areas with higher levels of EMF exposure.
