In 1996, the United States implemented a critical public health initiative—fortifying grains with folic acid—to prevent neural tube defects (NTDs) in developing embryos. While officially framed as a solution for nutritional deficiency, there’s deeper context that sheds light on why this intervention might have been urgently necessary: the silent disruption of critical biochemical pathways by non-native electromagnetic fields (nnEMFs).
The precise timing of folic acid fortification coincided closely with rising global proliferation of wireless technology in the mid-1990s, a period marked by explosive growth in mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and cell towers. Neural tube defects, tragic conditions characterized by improper closure of the embryonic neural tube, have long been linked to impaired methylation pathways—pathways crucially supported by adequate folate metabolism.
Proper methylation is essential for synthesizing nucleotides and producing S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), which is vital for DNA repair and myelination. Myelination—the insulating process of nerve fibers—is indispensable to healthy neurological function and robust embryonic development. Folic acid supports these essential methylation pathways, indirectly enhancing mitochondrial stability, DNA integrity, and cellular resilience.
However, compelling research dating back to the 1990s, such as the 1997 study by Farrell et al., demonstrated that EMF exposure indeed caused significant abnormalities in chicken embryos, including neural tube defects identical to those seen in humans. Tragically, this mirrors exactly the condition that took the life of my daughter, Angel Leigh Coates. Despite the mounting evidence, the public was repeatedly assured EMF radiation was safe—a claim now glaringly refuted by science.
Understanding this, the folic acid fortification can be viewed through a critical lens—as an indirect measure to reinforce compromised biochemical pathways disrupted by nnEMFs. Yet, folic acid alone cannot adequately shield us from the ongoing mitochondrial assault from microwaves emitted by wireless devices. Enhanced methylation can indeed help buffer against oxidative stress, maintain mitochondrial health, and support neural development, but this is only a partial solution.
The stark reality is clear: as long as we continue saturating our environment with harmful microwaves, every protective measure remains merely a band-aid. True safety demands that we tackle the root issue—unregulated EMF exposure—by repealing Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act and mandating safer, innovative solutions like Li-Fi, which utilize safe, visible-light frequencies instead of hazardous microwaves.
In memory of Angel Leigh Coates, and countless others whose lives have been forever changed by preventable tragedies, it’s imperative to take immediate action:
- #TrumpRepeal704
- Mandate Li-Fi, a safe, light-based 6G network to replace dangerous microwave-emitting Wi-Fi
Only by addressing EMF pollution head-on can we genuinely protect future generations. Join us in advocating for a safer electromagnetic environment for all. The time to act is now.
