The Mission, The Science, and Why “Safer Usage” Is the Only Thing That Has Ever Mattered
Hey everyone,
If you’ve landed on RF Safe for the first time, welcome. If you’ve been with us since the late ’90s, thank you — we wouldn’t still be here without you.
This post is for both of you. I want to lay it all out in plain English, no hype, no corporate spin, just the straight truth about what RF Safe actually stands for after 28 years of doing this work.
We Are Not Anti-Technology. We Are Pro-Safety.
RF Safe was founded in 1998 because even back then the warning signs were impossible to ignore. I saw the early research, the clusters of illness near towers, the animal studies showing damage at levels regulators called “safe,” and I realized the public was being left in the dark.
Our mission has never changed:
Protect families — especially kids and pregnant women — from unnecessary microwave/RF exposure while still letting people enjoy modern technology.
That’s it. We don’t want to take your phone away. We want you to be able to use it without gambling with your health or your children’s future.
The Core Belief That Drives Everything We Do
There is no safer phone under today’s SAR ratings. Only safer usage matters.
Every single phone on the market today is designed to comply with FCC guidelines that only protect against heating (thermal effects). Those guidelines were never designed to protect against the non-thermal biological effects that thousands of studies have documented for decades.
We say it every day because it’s true: The science shows harm at levels thousands to millions of times lower than what your phone is allowed to emit.
We’ve cataloged over 1,400 peer-reviewed studies showing clear harm, another 1,800+ “mixed” studies that still contain real harm signals, while “no effect” and “benefit” categories remain tiny on our stats page (rfsafe.org/stats). That’s not cherry-picking — that’s the actual body of evidence.
The Science Was Clear Long Before 5G or Smartphones
Go back and read the papers from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. They’re not fringe. They’re published in respected journals and they show:
- Irreversible infertility in mice after 5 generations at 0.168 – 1.053 µW/cm² (Magras & Xenos 1997)
- Two-fold increase in childhood leukemia near TV towers at 0.2 – 8 µW/cm² (Hocking 1996)
- Direct effects on ion channels at 2–4 µW/cm² (D’Inzeo 1988)
- Slowed reaction time and memory issues in children at 4–10 µW/cm² (Chiang 1989)
- Hippocampus damage at 10–25 µW/cm² (Belokrinitskiy 1982)
- Blood-brain barrier leakage at 120 µW/cm² (Salford 1993)
… and on and on.
These weren’t high-power lab torture tests. These were real-world levels. The same kind of exposure people were already getting from broadcast towers, early cell systems, and radar.
Then came the NTP study (clear cancer at 1.5 W/kg) and Ramazzini (same tumors at 0.1 W/kg). The 2025 WHO systematic reviews finally admitted high certainty of cancer in animals and reduced pregnancy success from male exposure. Exactly what the early research predicted.
The science didn’t flip in 2025. It was always there.
The Regulatory Betrayal
While the evidence mounted, regulators did the opposite of protect.
- The CTIA spent $25 million on the Wireless Technology Research program, then fired Dr. George Carlo when his team started finding DNA damage and tumors.
- In 1996 Congress passed the Telecommunications Act — Section 704 — which literally forbids local governments from considering health or environmental effects when approving cell towers. That single clause trampled the First Amendment, Fifth Amendment (takings), and Tenth Amendment.
- The FCC adopted “safety” guidelines that only consider heating, even though the research showed non-thermal effects decades earlier.
- The WHO sat on “possibly carcinogenic” (Group 2B) for years while kids’ brains and reproductive systems were being exposed 24/7.
This isn’t conspiracy talk. It’s documented history.
What RF Safe Actually Stands For
- Education first — We translate the science so normal parents and teachers can understand it. No jargon walls. Just facts.
- Safer usage today — Airplane mode when not in use, speakerphone or air-tube headsets, keep phones out of pockets and away from pregnant bellies, wired internet at home and school, distance is your friend.
- Hard-wiring schools and homes — WiFi in classrooms is the worst idea we ever had for kids. Ethernet cables exist for a reason.
- Li-Fi as the real future — Light-based internet gives you speed without the microwave blanket. It’s already working in labs and real deployments. This is the technology that can finally separate convenience from chronic exposure.
- No more “safe phone” marketing lies — We call it out every time. SAR ratings are meaningless for real biological safety. Period.
- Support for the people on the front lines — Firefighters who fought cell towers on stations, police officers with radar-gun cancer clusters, the families dealing with electrosensitivity. Their stories matter.
This Is About Protecting the Next Generation
Every parent wants to give their kids the best start in life. Right now that means protecting their developing brains, reproductive systems, and DNA from a form of pollution that industry and regulators still pretend doesn’t exist at these levels.
We are not against progress. We are against reckless progress that treats human biology like an afterthought.

If this resonates with you, here’s what you can do right now:
- Check our live research stats at rfsafe.org/stats
- Read the early studies we’ve linked throughout our site.
- Start with one safer habit today — airplane mode at night, wired headphones, or turning off WiFi when the kids are home.
- Talk to your school board about hard-wired classrooms.
- Support the push for Li-Fi in public infrastructure.
The warning signs were there before most of us ever owned a cellphone. They’re still there, and they’re getting louder.
We’ve been sounding the alarm since 1998. We’re not going anywhere.
No safer phone. Only safer usage.
And one day — with enough voices — safer technology.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring.
