Protective effect of paricalcitol in rat testicular damage induced by subchronic 1800 MHz radiofrequency radiation
Abstract
Overview
This study investigates the protective effects of paricalcitol on testicular damage induced by 1800 MHz radiofrequency radiation (RFR) in Sprague Dawley rats.
Methodology
Subjects consisted of 28 male rats, divided into four groups:
- Control group with no treatments
- RFR group exposed to 1800 MHz RFR for 1 hour daily for 30 days
- Paricalcitol group receiving 0.2 μg/kg paricalcitol three times weekly for 30 days
- Combined RFR + Paricalcitol group subjected to both RFR exposure and paricalcitol treatment
Findings
The study observed:
- Significant ultrastructural changes in the RFR group’s testicular cells
- Reduced damage in the RFR + Paricalcitol group compared to RFR only group
- Increased antioxidant enzyme levels and reduced lipid peroxidation in the RFR + Paricalcitol group, suggesting protective effects of paricalcitol
Conclusion
Paricalcitol may have a protective role in mitigating RFR-induced testicular damage, potentially associated with subfertility or infertility risks from RFR exposure.
