EMF Exposure Changes Due to the Digital Television Switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece
Abstract
Overview
In this study, the effects of the digital television switchover on electromagnetic fields (EMF) exposure in Thessaloniki, Greece, are closely examined.
Findings
The research findings suggest that although the electric fields align with international safety standards as per ICNIRP guidelines, they are notably higher than previously reported values from other countries. This discrepancy can likely be attributed to differences in the selection of measurement points. Additionally, a significant reduction in EMF exposure was observed with the transition from analog to digital broadcasting systems:
- Median power density reduced from 60 μW m to 13.3 μW m in digital format.
Conclusion
The study concludes that the digital switchover potentially lowers the exposure of the population to harmful radiofrequency fields in the UHF spectrum, suggesting a public health benefit. Careful consideration of measurement locations is essential for accurate EMF assessments.
