Risk Communication Strategies for Possible Health Risks From RF-EMF Emission by Telecom Structures
Abstract
Overview
There is significant public concern regarding the safety of RF-EMF emissions from telecommunication base stations and structures. This study addresses the broader societal anxiety about the perceived health risks associated with these emissions.
Findings
- Interviews conducted with various stakeholders in Malaysia revealed a general distrust towards telecommunication companies, primarily because of non-compliance with safety guidelines.
- Local residents expressed fears about the proximity of telecommunication structures to their homes, cultural objections, and envy concerning rental income.
- The lack of a responsible agency leads to ineffective risk communication, attributed to inconsistent messages from authorities.
Conclusion
The study provides eleven targeted recommendations aimed at enhancing risk communication in Malaysia. These include the need to repair, build, and strengthen trust and credibility among public health authorities, which are crucial for effective risk communication. This approach could be applied globally to improve dialogue about RF-EMF health risks.
