Oxidative and mutagenic effects of low intensity GSM 1800 MHz microwave radiation
Abstract
Overview
The study explores the oxidative and mutagenic impacts of low intensity microwave radiation (MWR), specifically from GSM 1800 MHz emitted by smartphones, on developing quail embryos. There has been ongoing discussion regarding the potential carcinogenic risks associated with MWR from wireless devices.
Materials and Methods
- The model used for this study involved developing quail embryos.
- Embryos were exposed to MWR with an intensity of 0.32 µW/cm2, discontinuously cycling with 48 seconds on and 12 seconds off, over 19 days.
Findings
Key findings include:
- Significant increase in oxidative stress markers in the embryonic cells.
- DNA integrity damage and enhanced oxidative DNA damage.
- Considerable increase in embryo mortality.
Conclusion
Exposure to low intensity GSM 1800 MHz from a typical modern smartphone resulted in notable oxidative and mutagenic effects in the biological model. This poses a recognized risk factor, suggesting an urgent need to reevaluate current safety standards for MWR exposure.
