Evaluation of radiofrequency and extremely low-frequency field levels at children's playground sites in Greece from 2013 to 2018
Abstract
Overview
From 2013 to 2018, the Greek Atomic Energy Commission conducted in-situ measurements of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) and extremely low-frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields across 317 children's playgrounds in 16 municipalities across Greece. This study adheres to the 2009 legislative framework requiring compliance with EMF exposure limits in children's playgrounds.
Findings
- Study measured RF and ELF EMF levels in both urban and suburban playgrounds.
- The electric field (E) and exposure ratio (Λ) for RF and electric field (E), and magnetic flux density (B) for ELF were statistically analyzed.
- No significant difference in EMF levels between urban and suburban environments.
- RF and ELF field levels are generally lower than or equal to typical background levels.
Conclusion
There is no significant differentiation in EMF exposure between urban and suburban playgrounds. Higher RF fields in urban areas are attributed to close proximity to base stations. The uniformity in ELF exposures, regardless of environment, suggests minimal differences in exposure risks across playground environments. Further studies using personal dosimeters and national epidemiological investigations are planned to deepen understanding and ensure children's safety.
