Abstract

Abstract Overview

With the increasing prevalence of smartphones, concerns have emerged about potential electromagnetic interference (EMI) with active implantable medical devices (AIMD). Such interferences can compromise the functionality and safety of medical devices, leading to significant patient risks.

Methodology

The study employed a high-fidelity 3D magnetic field mapping setup with a spatial resolution of 1 mm, using a three-axis Hall probe and teslameter, managed by a robot titled COSI Measure. The investigation specifically targeted popular smartphones such as the iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 12, and MagSafe charger.

Key Findings

  • The stray magnetic fields from specific components like the annular array of magnets, wide-angle camera, and speaker exceeded the 1 mT limit set by ISO 14117:2019.
  • For safety, iPhone 13 Pro should be maintained at a minimum distance of 25 mm from an AIMD to avoid adverse EMI.

Conclusion

The findings highlight the urgent need for manufacturers and health professionals to consider these interference risks and integrate them into safety protocols. The study advocates for more transparent information regarding magnetic fields emitted by electronic consumer products and suggests that smartphones should be included in the broader EMI risk assessment processes for AIMDs.
