Magnetic Field-Induced Interactions between Phones Containing Magnets and Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices - Flip it to be Safe?

Abstract

Overview

Recent studies have raised concerns about the potential activation of magnet-sensitive switches in cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) by nearby smartphones, particularly the iPhone 12 series.

Objective and Methods

A prospective single-center observational study was conducted to assess the risks associated with magnetic field interactions between the iPhone 12 and CIEDs. Both in vivo and ex vivo scenarios were examined using a 3-axis hall probe to measure magnetic fields, and the effects on a variety of CIEDs from different manufacturers were tested.

Findings

  • Incidence Rate: Significant activation of magnet-sensitive switches was observed, with different rates of occurrence depending on the orientation of the phone (back or front facing the CIED).
  • Magnet Mode Triggering: In vivo, 18.3% of CIED patients experienced activations when the back of the iPhone 12 was placed close to the skin over the CIED pocket.
  • Risk Factors: Implantation depth was identified as a crucial factor influencing the activation.

Conclusion

The research clearly highlights the health risks posed by placing smartphones with strong magnets, like the iPhone 12, too close to CIEDs. While these interactions occur only in close proximity and with specific alignment, it is essential to educate patients with CIEDs to avoid placing such devices directly over their implants to mitigate any risks.
