A meta-analysis of the risk of salivary gland tumors associated with mobile phone use: the importance of correct exposure assessment
Abstract
Overview
This study was designed to investigate the risk of developing salivary gland tumors associated with mobile phone use. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, examining studies from various databases to determine any potential carcinogenic risks posed by mobile phones.
Findings
- Extensive literature search across four different databases.
- Included a total of seven studies in the meta-analysis.
- Studies evaluated via the Newcastle-Ottawa scale.
- No significant association found between mobile phone use and salivary gland tumors (OR=1.06, 95% CI=0.86-1.32).
- No evidence of publication bias detected.
Conclusion
Despite the findings, multiple limitations within the studies suggest that these results may not accurately represent the true carcinogenic risk, particularly for long-term heavy users of mobile phones. The need for precise definitions in exposure assessments is highlighted to correctly ascertain the associated risks.
