Can Low-Level RF Exposure Affect Cognitive Behaviour in Lab Animals? Literature Review of Spatial Learning and Place Memory
Abstract
Overview
This review explores the impact of low-level radiofrequency (RF) fields, commonly associated with mobile phone technology, on the cognitive behavior of laboratory animals.
Methodology
- Studies included in this review followed an a priori defined protocol with specific inclusion criteria.
- Exclusion of studies occurred if there were insufficient details on exposure, dosimetry, or if a sham-exposed control group was absent.
Findings
A total of 62 studies were reviewed, dating back to 1993, assessing the effects on spatial memory and place learning:
- 17 studies were excluded from analysis.
- 20 studies found no significant effects related to RF fields.
- 21 studies noted significant impairments or deficits.
- 4 studies suggested beneficial effects.
The results were inconclusive as to whether these effects were due to specific exposure/testing conditions or were coincidental. Suggestions for possible molecular mechanisms behind observed effects exist, though none have been definitively confirmed.
Conclusion
The review highlights the need for further behavioral studies with a consistent animal model and standardized protocols to clarify these findings. Detailed dosimetry using anatomically realistic animal models is recommended for future research.
