Abstract

Overview

The study investigates the impact of increased cell phone use in South Asia on the presentation of patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) over the past two decades.

Findings

  • Participant Profile: In a cohort study of 62 consecutive patients managed between 2017 and 2020, 71% had large or giant VS, and 77.4% showed moderately severe to profound hearing loss. Almost all patients (96.7%) used cell phones.
  • Impact of Cell Phone Use: Increased cell phone use was associated with earlier diagnosis of VS, smaller tumor sizes in recent years compared to earlier data. Also, a greater proportion of patients now present with milder forms of hearing loss and consult otolaryngologists earlier.
  • Challenges: Despite these improvements, a significant majority still present with severe hearing loss and large tumors, indicating an ongoing need for enhanced awareness and early screening practices.

Conclusion

While cell phone use has improved early diagnosis and treatment outcomes of VS, critical challenges remain significant, and ongoing efforts are needed to enhance patient and physician awareness regarding early screening and diagnostics.
