Can extremely low frequency magnetic field affect human sperm parameters and male fertility?
Abstract
Overview
Exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) can influence various sperm parameters in human males. This study investigates how ELF-MF affects sperm motility, morphology, and reactive oxygen species production.
Findings
- Exposure to ELF-MF at 50 Hz and 1 mT for two hours can significantly alter the progressive motility and morphology of spermatozoa.
- The study notes a decrease in the progressive and non-progressive motility of spermatozoa.
- There is also a noted decrease in spermatozoa with typical morphology.
- Importantly, sperm concentration was not affected by ELF-MF exposure.
Conclusion
The findings suggest a significant impact of ELF-MF on sperm functional parameters which might influence male reproductive capabilities. The study underscores the potential health risks associated with occupational exposure to ELF-MF as well as from household appliances and electronic devices.
