Effect of Mobile Phone use on Hearing in Young Adults: An Observational Study
Abstract
Abstract Summary
Overview
There is growing concern over the health impacts of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by mobile phones, particularly their effects on the auditory system. This study aims to investigate these potential impacts on hearing in young adults.
Findings
- The study included 75 medical students, all of whom had been using mobile phones for more than a year.
- Baseline hearing status was assessed using Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), Otoacoustic emissions (OAE), and Brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA).
- Follow-up assessments were performed at 6 months and 1 year to observe any changes.
- No significant changes in hearing thresholds were observed at any point, indicating no short-term effects of mobile phone use on hearing.
Conclusion
While no immediate effects were found, the possibility of long-term impacts on hearing as a result of prolonged mobile phone use cannot be dismissed and warrants further study.
