Abstract

Abstract Summary

Overview

The phenomenon of Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance attributed to Electromagnetic Fields (IEI-EMF), also known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity, has gained attention in Polish society following significant changes in telecommunications law towards the end of 2019.

Findings

  • The initial internet survey conducted at the end of 2018 showed a prevalence estimation of 39.7% for IEI-EMF, indicating potential bias.
  • A subsequent telephone survey at the end of 2020 adjusted the prevalence rate to less than 1.8%, highlighting the importance of the survey medium and representativeness of the sample.
  • Adjustments in methodology and criteria for classifying electrosensitive individuals provided more reliable results, consistent with global studies.

Conclusion

Critical analysis of methodologies and definitions used in identifying IEI-EMF prevalence are essential for accurate results. This study underscores the need for the cautious interpretation of elevated frequency reports and stresses the significance of robust research frameworks.
