Abstract

Overview

The study explores the complex interactions between geomagnetic fields (GMF), geomagnetic disturbances (GMD), and the global incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The research spans a period from 1996 to 2019 and includes data from 204 countries and territories.

Background

The correlation between stable and unstable geomagnetic activities with mortality, incidence, and prevalence of CVDs remains ambiguous. This study aims to bring clarity to these associations using extensive data analysis.

Methodology

  • Analysis included long-term global data based on the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study.
  • Data encompassed GMF intensity, GMD frequency, CVDs events, weather, and health economic indicators.
  • Approaches used included linear regression and panel data modeling to identify correlations and adjust for confounding factors.

Findings

  • Positive correlations identified between total GMF intensity and mortality from total CVDs, displaying a more pronounced effect in higher geomagnetic intensities.
  • Conversely, horizontal GMF intensity showed a negative correlation with total CVD mortality.
  • High-frequency geomagnetic storms in high-income areas were also linked to increased CVD mortality, a trend that diminishes nearer the equator.

Conclusion

The study concludes that stable and long-term horizontal components of GMF may be beneficial to cardiac health, whereas unstable short-term geomagnetic disturbances could pose a hazard. These findings highlight the need to consider geomagnetic conditions in cardiovascular health assessments and suggest possible protective strategies against geomagnetic disturbances.
