The cellular life cycle
Mitosis is one phase of the life of a cell--the phase
during which genetic information is separated into two new nuclei and the cell
divides. Interphase is the period of time when the cell grows and replicates
its DNA. Cell growth, via protein synthesis and organelle reproduction, occurs
throughout interphase, while DNA is only replicated during the S (synthesis)
phase. Chromosomes also move around during meiosis; the two processes have
many similarities, and also have some striking differences.
