The Cell Phone RF Radiation problem specifically affects hearing aids because GMS uses a form of RF transmission known as TDMA that sends out streams of pulses which contain the speech signal. These pulses are a 100 percent modulation of the RF carrier frequency, which lies in the range of 800 to 2,000 MHz, having a duration of about 0.6 msec at a pulse rate of 217 Hz. The result is that the user of a hearing aid which is susceptible to these TDMA signals hearing a rasping 217 Hz square wave. Hearing aids are a form of high-gain audio frequency amplifiers that have to be carefully designed to avoid radio frequency signals being picked up so that "Audio" content can be heard. Cell Phone RF Radiation signals are picked up in the wiring and/or circuits components in a hearing aid and then the modulation of the RF signal is demodulated (detected) in the nonlinearities that arise in the amplifier.
