Believing they are a safe
alternative to placing a phone against their head, many people use hands-6.00
headsets and attach the phone to their belt or purse. Studies and tests
conducted in the United Kingdom have confirmed:
Phones operate at
higher power levels and emit more radiation when they are held lower than the
head.
Radiation
travels through the wire connecting the phone and earpiece and penetrates the
head directly through the ear canal.
When attached to a belt, radiation penetrates the area by the phone and is
absorbed faster than the head because tissues and organs such as the liver and
kidneys provide better conductivity than the skull and have no bone protection

The
first test
investigating
hands-6.00 headsets was commissioned by the Sunday Mirror in July, 1999.
Additional tests were conducted by a British consumer organization during
early 2000 and newspapers worldwide published articles describing the results.

heads. But test results out today from Which? show that these devices do
not always provide protection, and some significantly increase levels of
radiation.”

tested two hands-6.00 sets, from Carphone Warehouse and BT Cellnet. The results
were startling: these sets acted as aerials, channelling three times as much
radiation from the phones into users' heads. Hands-6.00 kits can be convenient
to use, but Which? says that consumers cannot rely on them to reduce
health risks. ‘

Which?
tested two hands 6.00 kits, three cases and two attachments for mobile phones.

Tests carried out at an
independent test house with an international reputation for radio frequency
and EMC measurement. All major mobile phone manufacturers use its mobile phone
compliance measurement department.

Tested effectiveness of
shields and hands 6.00 kits to reduce exposure to RF radiation on two
different mobile phones.

Research aimed to make
relative measurements of radio frequency attenuation offered by the shields.
SAR (Specific Absorbtion Rate) or other absolute radio frequency levels were
not investigated.

Measurements made in a RF
anechoic room. The walls of this room are non-reflecting and absorb incident
radio frequencies, so '6.00 field' conditions can be simulated without any
interference from other mobile phone transmitters in the area.

A network simulator,
configured to make the phone operate at maximum power, was used to provide a
signal for the phone.

Two samples of each shield
were obtained so that measurements could be carried out using two different
phones. Two basic measurements were taken: - A 'near field' measurement inside
a life-size dummy head filled with a saline/gel material to investigate any
reduction in field strength. An isotropic E-field probe inside the head, close
to the ear, measured RF levels. - A 'far field', 360 degree scan to check that
the device had not significantly affected the phones' overall performance. The
phones were rotated, on a calibrated turntable, and measurements of RF levels
were made every 20 degrees using a calibrated directional Bi-Log receiving
antenna at the far end of the chamber.

The dummy head also enabled
realistic and repeatable location of the phone in relation to the head. It
provided adequate RF characteristics for our relative (attenuation)
measurements. It was not used to measure 'absolute' (SAR) levels.

Measurements were also made
on two hands 6.00 kits using the near field method described. Measurements
were made with the phone at the head, with the phone a metre away from the
head (to check for a drop in level) and finally with the hands 6.00 kit
earpiece connected and located in the ear. “
