Residents living along Deering Avenue and Lindsay Road in a quiet Spring Hill neighborhood may be getting a very tall neighbor soon. The Fellowship Community Church has agreed to lease out a chunk of land for a 150-foot cell phone tower.
Some residents who live near the lot aren't happy about the idea. They said they're worried about the tower's appearance and how it affects property values.
Resident Robert Swann said he's worried about radiation.
"I know they told us that the radiation will probably be about as much as a hair dryer, but you only use a hair dryer about 10 minutes," Swann said. "This is going to be 24-7, 365, so there are some concerns."
The church will get $12,000 a year for leasing out the land. Church officials were quick to point out that 1,400 letters were sent to people in the area inviting them to a meeting about the tower and about 10 people showed up.
The company that wants to build the cell phone tower said it's going to put in fencing and landscaping along the base of the tower and leave as many trees as possible.
Construction of the tower isn't set in stone yet. The project still has to go before the county's planning and zoning commission for the green light.
