Barbara Pachter, president of Pachter & Associates, offers etiquette tips for cell phone users. The Internet also is full of tips. Here are some to remember.
• Speak softly. Cell phones usually are more sound sensitive than regular phones, so don’t yell. And, no amount of shouting will improve a bad connection. When riding on public transportation, keep your voice low or to a conversational level. Be sure to avoid extended calls.
• Do not wear more than one wireless device on your body. You can’t be professional if you seem like you are plugged into a wall somewhere.
• Do not have personal or business-related cell phone conversations in the bathroom at work, even if you checked for feet. You never know when someone will walk in.
• Turn the ringer as low as possible.
• Rarely is it appropriate to have phone conversations at public gatherings such as concerts, plays, movies, funerals, lectures, church services, or other social events. Turn your cell phone off.
• Remember that the people you are with usually take priority over a phone call. Do not interrupt a face-to-face conversation to take a call.
• Respect the personal space of others by taking your conversation 10 or more feet away from people. Ideally, take your phone call into a private space. Refrain from using your phone in a place where others can’t escape your conversation.
• Inform the person that you are calling that you are using a cell phone; if the connection fades or drops, the person will know to wait to see if you will call back.
• Focus on safety first. Do not use cell phones when they impede your ability to drive or walk. Get a hands-free kit or phone cradle for your vehicle or a walk-about kit for your phone.
• As a ring tone, do not use the “striptease” melody, theme songs from TV shows or songs by any pop star young enough to be your child.
• Use caller ID, voice messages, or if you must have the phone on, get a vibrating battery or universal belt clip mechanism.
