RF waves can and do meet boundaries in their medium. When a wave meets a boundary, it can be reflected or transmitted. Transmitted waves are refracted or diffracted:
  • Reflection can be partial or complete. Reflection can also involve a phase flip (change of phase of 180 degrees.)
  • Refraction occurs when a wave crosses a boundary from one medium to another. A wave entering a medium at an angle will change direction.
  • Diffraction refers to the "bending of waves around an edge" of an object. Diffraction depends on the size of the object relative to the wavelength of the wave.
All these phenomena apply to electromagnetic waves, such as light waves, as well as to pressure waves and water waves


 

Why deflect radiation and not absorb it?

Everybody knows that radiation emittingMicrowave Oven products, such as microwave ovens, can be very dangerous if they are not properly shielded. The glass door on the front of every microwave oven has embedded shielding material that deflects radiation back into the cavity of the oven. Absorbent shielding materials are never used because radiation would escape as they become saturated, their composition weakens over time and they deteriorate.

This commonly used shielding technique is also referred to as reflection.

By 1845 Michael Faraday had performed several experiments showing that the plane of polarization could be altered by magnetic fields. This ultimately led to James Clerk Maxwell's brilliant unification of optics and electromagnetism, when his wave equations predicted that the speed of light should be 1/O{e0m0} , which was remarkably close to the experimental value. Light, then, was an electromagnetic disturbance propagating through the ether "Space Time".

The Law of Reflection

When a electromagnetic ray of RF Radiation strikes a reflective surface, the RF ray reflects off, like light hitting a mirror. Reflection involves a change in direction of the rf ray. The convention used to express the direction of a RF ray is to indicate the angle which the RF ray makes with a normal drawn to the surface of the reflector. The angle of incidence is the angle between this normal and the incident ray; the angle of reflection is the angle between this normal and the reflected ray. According to the law of reflection, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. These concepts are illustrated in the animation on the right.

Sponge Absorption Of WaterThis illustration of water being absorbed by a sponge and clarifies technically why deflection is a much safer way to shield Microwave RF Radiation than absorption!

As you can see, the sponge expands as it becomes saturated and water escapes from the bottom. 

This principle applies to every type of absorption material, including phone radiation shielding devices that claim to absorb radiation. As they become saturated, the microwave radiation is absorbed by the head. 

Absorption Of Radiation For Phone Shielding

Absorbent shielding materials are never used because radiation escapes as they become saturated, their composition weakens over time and they deteriorate. This is one of two reasons why the World Health Organization does not recommend the use of cell phone shielding products that claim to absorb radiation. The other is that all absorbent cell phone shielding products cause the software program the cell phone uses to regulate power out put to increase microwave emissions, to compensate for lost signal strength due to absorption of the RF signal. When using products that absorb radiation your only tricking the cell phone into thinking it's located in a bad signal strength area. The cell phone simply can not tell the difference between something you put on the phone to absorb RF Radiation or if it's trees, buildings, mountains or anything else that may prevent the rf signal from reaching a cellular site, so the cell phone does the only thing its programmed to do "INCREASE RF POWER" and Radiation "Not Good"


World Health Organization Statement

Dr. Michael Repacholi, Occupational and Environmental Health coordinator for WHO, told reporters on August 11, 1999 "As for these sleeves (shields) that are supposed to absorb the radiation, we wouldn't recommend them because you could be redistributing the radiofrequency field from the antenna and would be modifying the operation of the phone."

During the summer of 2000, the World Health Organization issued an updated fact sheet, adding "scientific evidence does not indicate any need for radio frequency-absorbing covers or other absorbing devices on mobile phones. They cannot be justified on the effectiveness of many such devices in reducing RF exposure."
